Dragonfly

September 25, 2019 by Martin Willison 1 Comment

Dragonflies are quite common in Long Lake Park during late summer and early fall. These insects are the tigers of the insect world and have been around for many millions of years. While they will not bother a human in any way, flying insects such as mosquitoes need to be specially wary because they will easily become dinner for dragonflies. The one in the picture is probably one of the meadowlark species. Dragonflies and damselflies are rather similar but can be told apart by how they hold their wings when at rest. Damselflies fold up their wings while dragonflies hold them open like this one is doing. One of the wings is damaged, perhaps due to the hurricane. Click on the picture for a better view.
