Speech from the Throne, a tonic

May 27, 2025 by Martin Willison Leave a Comment

It was good to hear King Charles speak about the importance of parks and nature at the opening of Parliament in Ottawa today (May 27th 2025). CTV reported this part of the speech as follows:

“Nature is core to Canada’s identity,” said the King. He added the Liberal government will “protect more of Canada’s nature than ever before through the creation of new national parks, national urban parks, marine protected areas, and other conservation initiatives.”

Natural parks are critical elements in the physical fabric of healthy cities. They are places where one’s mind can unwind and where we can enjoy, individually or collectively, the intricate beauty of the natural world. A walk through the woods to a favourite spot by a lake where one can sit on a rock and enjoy the ambience is one of life’s finest experiences. It is literally a tonic for health, both physical and mental.
