Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)

October 15, 2019 by Martin Willison 1 Comment

Witch-hazel shrubs are flowering now (October 15th) along the sides of trails in Long Lake Park. This shrub is one of the most fascinating plants in the park. This year’s flowers and last years fruits (often called “nuts”) are present at the same time. The seeds inside the fruits are shot out when ready to released and may travel several metres through the air. The unusual flowers are pollinated at night by moths. Extracts from the plant have been used in traditional medicine. The shrub itself survives quite well under the forest canopy and is an indicator of old forest. Look out for it on your travels through the park!

The first photo shows Witch Hazel flowers and fruits together in October in the park; the second shows the flowers in September.
